Air/Sea or Fly Cruise Programs

Many cruise lines will include your return air transportation to the port of embarkation and disembarkation and other cruise lines will sell you a cruise only ticket and charge an additional amount for your air transportation. You can opt to make your own transportation arrangements to meet your individual requirements. The cruise lines work closely with the airlines and negotiate special airfares based on volumes or groups of passengers traveling on a particular airline. If you opt to take the cruise lines air/sea or fly/cruise program you must be aware that the cruise line reserves the right to select the air carrier, departure and arrival times, routings and may substitute scheduled service for charter flights or vice versa. Airfares that have been negotiated by the cruise line will limit your ability to make changes, exchange or endorsements on such airline tickets. This option may also restrict your ability in getting advance seat assignments and the accumulation or the use of frequent flyer air miles. The cruise lines airline tickets will clearly state the following that "the ticket is issued by the cruise line and is valid only on the dates and flight shown and that the airline ticket is only refundable to the issuer (the cruise line)". Seat assignment, special meals and frequent flyer miles are the sole responsibility of the passenger. Some cruise lines will permit changes, deviations, and upgrades in class of service to the air services they are providing for an additional supplementary service charge together with any additional airfare charges. Such requests should be submitted to the cruise line in writing at time of booking.

When considering a cruise vacation this is a very good question. The Cruise lines pre-book massive amounts of airline space. That allows you better access to flights, and many cruise lines pass on their reasonable prices to passengers whose travel agents book through them.

If you choose to make airline reservations on your own please select flight schedules that allow you enough time to get to the pier in time for the ship’s departure on the day of your cruise travel. That applies in reverse, leave enough breathing room to get to the airport with time to make your return flights after your lovely cruise vacation.

Two advantages of using cruise line provided airfare are:

1. By purchasing cruise line airfare, you also receive transfers to and from the airport to the pier.
2. If your flights are delayed and arrive past the time of the ship’s departure, the cruise line assumes responsibility for either delaying the ship’s sailing or getting you to the cruise ships first port of call.

You should let your travel agent book the Airline Reservations through the Cruise Line for safety reasons. This basically makes the Cruise Line responsible in the event of a flight or sailing delay or cancellation. Here’s a cruise tip, for a small additional "air deviation" fee, most cruise lines will attempt to book you on the airline or flights of your choice.

If you have frequent-flier miles be sure to book your flights well in advance to ensure your arrival on time. When scheduling your flight home after the cruise, be sure to take into account disembarking time from the ship and local transportation time to the airport. Leave plenty of time because some local airports may not be as sophisticated as those you might be used to. And in today’s world, security will make it even longer to board your flight for your cruise travel.

You should arrive at least a day before the cruise vacation, especially if you are flying a long distance to pick up the ship. That way, you can rest up and be ready to enjoy every moment of your cruise. You get the added benefit of not having to worry about a delayed or cancelled flight, causing you to miss the cruise. This was the best cruise tip I have learned over the years.

When you are flying to your cruise vacation you will have to consider baggage weight. Generally there are no restrictions on how much luggage you can take aboard ship, but do remember that if your cruise vacation involves a flight, airlines have their own baggage allowance restrictions. These vary on scheduled flights, depending on airline and route. Please note that the allowance may be less on international flights. When flying from New Zealand back to Miami after our millennium cruise vacation, Quanta’s airline was very strict about weight and charged us because we were over.

The cruise lines will generally supply you with its luggage tags which will be in addition to your personal ID tags. The luggage tags will be included with your cruise documents which normally arrive 2-3 weeks before your cruise vacation.

Here are some cruise tips we have learned through our cruise travel.

It is strongly suggested that you remove old airline flight tags to eliminate ANY possibility of confusion on the part of the airline.

An extra folded flight bag takes up very little room and it can be handy on your way home when you have more to carry then can be placed in your original luggage.

Be sure to keep your travel documents, identification documents, medications, valuables, a set of clean underwear, credit cards, cash and travelers checks on your person or in your carry-on luggage. Horror stories concerning lost airline luggage are well known.

When traveling outside the United States to pick up your cruise ship, make photocopies of your passport and cruise itinerary, place one set in each bag prior to checking them with the airline. This will ensure you that your luggage will catch up to you at some time during your cruise vacation.

When waiting in line or sitting in an airport, always have the strap to your carry-on luggage wrapped around an arm or leg, then it won't disappear without your knowledge.

Be very careful using your telephone card in airports. People will stand behind you and watch as you tap in the numbers. And much to your dismay, a month after your cruise travel, you get a huge telephone bill. I know it happened it me. I was not responsible for paying the bill, but it was a hassle.

It is useful to take an overnight bag for the last night of your cruise vacation. Your cabin steward will be collecting all checked bags the night before disembarkation, sometime around midnight. If you have this small overnight bag you can use it for the clothes you wore the evening before. And as mentioned, it comes in handy for packing all the mementos you picked up along the way.

Can I get airline seat assignments When Using the Cruise Line's Airfares?
Our standard air arrangements do not include making seat assignments. Seat assignments must be coordinated through your Travel Agent, or directly with the airline. Bookings utilizing our CUSTOM AIR service will attempt to secure seat assignments (Based on availability).
Can I use frequent flyer miles to upgrade using your fares and tickets?
All of our air carrier contracts are secured on bulk rates that restrict you from using any additional incentives, coupons or discounts. However, most carriers allow guests to accrue frequent traveler miles. Please contact the air carrier assigned to determine if your flights qualify for frequent flyer points.

CHILDREN 2 AND OVER

Infant will be booked Cruise Only with Royal Caribbean. Infant travel must be arranged and paid to the carrier directly prior to departure.

How does Air/Sea notify Travel Agents/Guests of schedule changes?
Air/Sea will attempt to notify Travel Agents/Guests of schedule changes. However it is the Travel Agent and Guests' responsibility to reconfirm flights prior to departure. Once tickets have been issued it is the airlines responsibility to protect schedule changes resulting in misconnecting flights.

We were required to fly out at 6am when I know that there were empty seats on later flights?
Airlines allocate only a certain amount of seats for cruise lines on flights. We do not have access to every seat on an aircraft at our contracted fare rate. Rule of thumb-the more popular a flight, the fewer seats the airline will sell us at our contracted rate. If you have a time of day departure preference, please request CUSTOM AIR for a nominal service fee. Additional air costs may also apply.

Why are the times of my flights going to and/or returning from my cruise so late?
Our standard air arrangements are geared toward your arrival at the cruise port on time-and home again. Due to the availability of flights and contract fares, optimum flight times may not be available. Sometimes there are local shore excursions that are offered so that airport wait time is minimized. If you have a time of day departure preference, please take advantage of our CUSTOM AIR arrangements for a nominal service fee. Additional air costs may also apply.

Why did some people receive better air schedules, even though I booked earlier?
Airlines make hourly changes to the availability of fares offered. A flight and contracted fare might be available, and then become unavailable, and then available again closer to sail date. You are not guaranteed better flight times by booking your cruise early. Remember our standard air arrangements do not give you a choice of departure times. If you have a time of day departure or air carrier preference, please utilize our CUSTOM AIR department for a nominal service fee. Additional air costs may apply.

Why do some of your flights connect through cities that are out of the way or inconvenient?
Airline flights during major holiday periods are very popular and sell out. At these times of year it is often difficult to find an empty airline seat-much less a seat that is at our contracted rates. Consequently, the air routings may be a little less desirable during these peak travel periods. If length of travel time is concern, please request CUSTOM AIR for a nominal service fee. Additional air costs may apply.

Why doesn't air arrangements provide direct, non-stop flights whenever possible?
In order to provide the lowest price possible for our standard air arrangements, we will often use lower fared connecting flights instead of non-stop flights. Sometimes non-stop flights will not have any seats left at our contracted air rates so connections must be used. If you have a preference for non-stop flights, please request and use our CUSTOM AIR service for a nominal service fee. Additional air costs may also apply.

Why is my airfare with your Air/Sea program so high?
If lowest possible fare is desired, there are usually lower sale/internet fares being offered by the airlines than what we offer. Note these are usually instant purchase fares with high cancellation and change penalties. The air add-on that we offer our guests provide the following benefits which include:
Transfers to and from the airport and seaport for you and your luggage.
Forwarding to next port of call in the event you flight is cancelled or delayed.
More flexible fares in the event your trip plans change.
Tracking of your inbound flights-so the ship will be informed of late arrivals and can assess a late ship departure.

Why is my flight arriving into another city other than the city of the port the ship is departing from? (Example: Seattle instead of Vancouver)
Airlines only provide cruise lines with a certain amount of seats into each city at our contracted rates. Once we have used up our allotment of seats into the ships departure city, we may us an additional city close in proximity to the port. In all cases when we use an alternate city we will transport guests via motor coach to the port. If you would like to guarantee your flight arrives into the city the ship departs from, please utilize our CUSTOM AIR service for a nominal service fee. Additional air costs may also apply.

Why was our group not on the same flights?
Guests from the same gateway that are booked at the same time in the same stateroom will be booked on the same flights. We cannot guarantee all other guests will be traveling together. Guests in separate cabins that desire to travel together may use our CUSTOM AIR service for a nominal service fee (this includes families in separate staterooms excluding minors under 21). Additional air costs may apply.
