PROGRESSO, MEXICO
Progresso is a port new to many cruise ships, and offered only on limited sailings. It is located on the Yucatan Peninsula, and is rich with ancient Mayan pyramids, vine-covered archaeological wonders, gentle people, and fiery cuisine unlike that served in the rest of Mexico. Progresso today has evolved from the sleepy fishing village it once was to a popular resort where vacationers come to explore the Mayan ruins and siesta in the midday sun. Local handcrafts are the primary items available for shoppers, but the colorful string hammocks are popular for souvenirs for friends back home. As is the case throughout Mexico -- it is advisable to drink only bottled water.
