Melilla, Spanish Morocco

Surrounded on all sides by Morocco, Mellila is an intriguing blend of Moorish and Iberian cultures. Remnants of Spain are everywhere in the city, but nowhere are they more prominently displayed than in the Plaza de España This park-like public space forms a perfect circle in the center of town. Look up as you walk and you'll see bits and pieces of Modernist architecture adjacent to fresco-style murals above Islamic tiled archways—the spirit of Spain with a North African accent!

The European enclave of Melilla lies in the North African region of Kelaya, the Home of Castles. Melilla enjoys a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, and combines the mystery of Africa with the customs of Spain. It is a small city full of character and an intriguing blend of mixed cultures of Christian, Muslim, Hebrew and Hindu cultures. Visit Melilla from the comfort of your coach as you travel to the Muslim and Berber neighborhoods of Melilla. You will see the Castle of Rostro Gordo, the main border with Morocco, the beaches of the Paseo Maritimo, and the downtown core of Melilla city. From the 15th-century Melilla La Vieja fortress in the pueblo (Old Town), you will set out on a short walking tour. Those who do not wish to walk may simply remain in the Plaza España in front of the Casino Militar and do some shopping in the downtown area. Leather handicrafts, tapestries, local pottery and accessories are available.

Tipping & Bargaining

Give around 5 to 10% for a tip in restaurants even if there is a service charge.

Try to bargain for cheap accommodation (although that does not come cheap in Spanish Morocco!). Bargaining is the rule in market places, but in shops prices are definitely set.

Shopping & Finances

Spanish Morocco is setup as a duty free zone, so take advantage of some deals. Moroccan goods are obviously more expensive than in Morocco.

Banks offer good rates and ATMs can be found in the city centers. Spanish Morocco uses the euro.
