The Conquistadors first saw Mexico from the shores of Cozumel while searching for gold. Today, visitors to the island continue to seek out gold and silver jewelry in the shops of San Miguel while having a great time in its many local bars and restaurants. Plus, the waters around Cozumel's sheltered coral reefs make this one of the best snorkeling areas in the world.

COZUMEL
, 12 miles off the intriguing Yucatan Peninsula in Caribbean waters, and one of the world's noted dive centers, is mostly undeveloped with the exception of San Miguel town located on the west coast. (pop. 61,000).
Water sports rule. Cozumel hosts some 85,000 divers a year and claims to offer more dive options than any island in the world. Two small subs with glass bottoms are one way to see marine life. Another option is the crystal clear waters of Chankanaab Park and lagoon which offers Mayan and Olmec reproductions, lush gardens and bird life.
Mexico's largest island, 28 miles long and 11 mile wide, is the gateway to the mainland Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, Tulum and Xel-Ha. The modest San Gervasio ruins on Cozumel are easily reached from San Miguel.
Diving
Cozumel is fringed by a complex coral reef ecosystem. Part of a massive chain of reefs that stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to Honduras, it is the second largest reef system in the world.

Covering a total area of approximately 12 square miles, Cozumel's reefs are famous for their towering coral pinnacles that drop off into the abyss. A maze of swim-thru's, tunnels and coral caves provide shelter to more than 500 species of tropical fish. Incredible visibility provides stunning views of Turtles, Nurse Sharks, and Spotted Eagle Rays, as they glide effortlessly over the reef.

Currents and Weather
Famous for it's drift diving, Cozumel has generally mild currents that flow from South to North at 1-2 knots.

Predominantly warm and sunny days, and an average year round water temperature of 80 degrees provide perfect conditions for all aquatic activities.
